I find comments like this neither helpful to the conversation and actually quite derogatory. It just requires a different type of mindset to use it most effectively. Using VoIP CAN be just as effective as chat when using Maptool. There have been some games where I have seen a player contribute 50 words total because they can't keep up with the Jones of typing. As well, I can type what I think with very little delay as opposed to those who can only type quickly when they are copying something they are reading.

On the other hand, I am gifted with a 50 wmp typing speed. I VoIP into the aether and hope for the best. It causes me to feel self-conscious about my descriptions. When I'm DMing online, all of the above has now been divorced from my voice descriptions. Voice is very integral to the this experience. All to convey a more visual and tactile experience when creating the game world for my players. I motion at people, stomp around the table, jump up on my chair, kneel down and stare close at the battlemap. Use hand motions for explosions or spells. I stand up in combat, swing my arms around as if wielding swords and claws. When I DM in real life, I am a very visual describer. I think that online, chat has a very good defense. Chat for all in-game description and talk and VoIP for ooc combat and other off-topic stuff. At this current time, we are using a hybrid. I myself have been going 'round and 'round the debate of whether or not to use strict 'type only' rules in my games.
